3 miles out

Ram Island is a tiny island off the coast of Maine. It is 3 miles out in the Atlantic Ocean from the small town of Machiasport. There are no services on the island -- no electricity, no showers or toilets, no fresh water etc. There are some sheep, and the sky, and the ocean, and the land. (aerial photo)

The land is seagrass, peat, and amazing rock formations (and one tree). Nature is very dynamic there. The tides are about 25 feet, a constant force. The tidal part of the island becomes exposed twice a day with kelp canyons and gorgeous sea-carved rocks. There are high cliffs and flat grassy areas.

Ram Island is one of the most incredible places of natural beauty on the US east coast. It is privately owned by a friend who is sympathetic to Shintaido, and he wants to see this place used by people pursuing spiritual experiences.

a force of nature

Big nature can be beautiful and dangerous, and commands respect. The ocean water in Maine is quite cold. Seaweed covered rocks are extremely slippery. Sudden waves and strong tides can carry you out to sea. Temperatures in summer can range from 80 degrees F to 40 degrees F at night. Storms are possible, and heavy fog is common. Use logic, combined with a healthy instinct for self-preservation.
