retreat at ram island, maine

.: extended voice :.

big voice, tall voice, fat voice, small voice

Extended voicework encourages all sorts of phonated and unphonated sounds, including various qualities of silence that emerge from the free and authentic human self. The work is highly body-centered and concentrates on feeling resonances and characters of voices throughout the organism, in the presence of others and while alone.

Of particular importance is finding reflexive access to sounds that are normally muffled or distorted by the social contract. While these sounds may be functional in performance, the primary goal of this workshop will not address this exterior product, but rather the interior product of such sounds.

Sounds can be used as tools of leverage for unearthing buried selves and this will pose all the risks and benefits of other disciplines that unpack the psyche. As such, this is not an enterprise to be entered into lightly, but with sincerity, acceptance and love of one's own sounds and those of others.

Techniques drawn from Roy Hart Voicework, Fitzmaurice Voicework, yoga, bel canto classical tradition and theater-based sound improvisations.
